outside jog!

I tried running outside today and did half of week 8 (5 intervals of 5 minute run/1 minute walk) for a total of 25 minutes running and 2.87 miles, according to mapmyrun.com.  I didn't love being outside, mostly because I didn't have a plan of where I was going and it felt kind of aimless.  I had planned to go to the park by our house, and was shocked when I got there after just 1 interval.  Now I realized it's less than a mile away (funny how the walk always seems so long when I go there with Snoop).  So I had to improvise my route and try to decide how far from the house I really wanted to go.

I think for the future, I will use a running path either by the river or the lakefront so that I don't have to make a decision about which way to go.  Just run out for half of the run, then turn around and go back to finish.  Also won't have to deal with traffic and red lights that way.

My shins hurt a little and I feel a little wheezy from breathing the outside air.  I didn't use my ipod at all (even though I carried it) so I heard how hard I'm breathing.  I also had too much stuff - carried my phone, ipod, ID, keys and a water bottle.  I had pockets on my jacket, but everything kept bouncing in there.  So I ended up holding my water bottle and keys in one hand, and my phone in the other hand with my ID and ipod in my pockets.  What do you guys do with all your stuff?

Overall, the outdoor running went better than I expected so I am hopeful.  I'll try to add some outdoor runs into my regular workout mix.

  1. When I have the stroller it holds all my stuff. When I don't, I usually just carry my phone and my keys (just 1-2 keys...only my house keys, or if I drove somewhere only the car key). Some people tie the key to their shoelace so they don't have to carry it. If I listen to music I stack my iPod and my phone and carry them both in one hand-or you can get an armband-that works well too. As for water-I just drink a lot before I leave (but not too much or you'll actually hear/feel it sloshing) and drink a lot when I get home. I've seen people put waterbottles out along the course or you can a belt to hold your bottle but neither really work for me. Another option-if you're running near a park, there's sometimes drinking fountains.

  2. I travel light. Just bring an ID, an iPod and keys. I either put things in my pockets or hold them in my hands. I do so much better if I am listening to music. The trails are really nice. The one along the river is not that far from your apartment.

    Good for you.
