Week One, Session One - Done

When I started, I thought it was going to be way, way too cold to be walk/running the lake front, but I wasn't cold for long. I do think I need to find some long pants if I'm going to do this outside. Yoga pants probably won't cut it when it gets colder. I clearly am out of shape, but pleased to say that I completed everything I was supposed to do. And honestly, it feels pretty good...at least today. Why, oh why, is it so difficult to get started and to keep at it?

"run" #1

just finished my first workout.  i honestly can't remember the last time i worked out - last run was when i was unemployed (June 2010) and i think i did some wii workouts a little after Christmas of last year.

i went to the Y and used an elliptical/stepper machine.  I was able to do the first week of the couch to 5K, but it was tough.  no shin pain yet, and my muscles feel good.  talk to me tomorrow or monday and we'll see if that still stands.

hope you both had good workouts!

Run #5 (Katie)

Run 5 of 27 complete! I'm using the couch to 5k program by cool running. It's 9 weeks long with 3 run/walks each week. right now I'm on pace to run a 5k by February 20. There's always the possibility that I might have an off week with weather or illness.

the beginning

While celebrating Christmas a week early with the Jumper family in Cincinnati, mom announced, "I want to run a 10K for my 60th Birthday!"  This was the first time she had said that outloud and we were so proud of her.  Instantly, images of me cheering her on and making large posters to encourage her came to mind.  But I think Katie had another idea in mind.  She must have seen herself running right next to mom to encourage her.  She has really been the best runner of us - completing the Chicago Marathon as her first race!  Well, once Katie said she was going to run with mom, I decided I should too.  So, somewhat begrudgingly, I agreed that I would run, too.

Now I am OUT of shape...like "when the elevator in our building was stuck, I decided to wait it out til it was fixed and take the risk of getting stuck on it, instead of walking up 6 flights of stairs" out of shape.  So I must admit I am a bit apprehensive.  However, this is something that I have to do and having my mom and sister by my side will be just the motivation I need.

So we began by emailing about possible races in April or May - I looked up races near Chicago, and then Katie suggested a destination race.  We're thinking Florida, New Orleans or even South Carolina.  We had a three-way call (who knew 3 way calling still existed?) and started talking about how to make this a reality.  Everyone left with their tasks - mom has to pick the race since it's for her birthday, Katie will research places to stay and I am in charge of setting up the blog (check that off my list).

We are hoping to inspire each other and make this last.  It feels a little cliche that we are starting this journey very near New Year's (and I'm actually not excited about how crowded the gym will be this month), but I think with the race as our goal, and the support of each other we will be able to be successful beyond other resolutions that are usually dropped by valentine's day.  We also hope that we will inspire you - all friends and family are welcome to join us on our journey towards healthier lives - for the active 60 year old, the mom trying to lose the last of the baby weight, and the girl who just loves beer and fried food.

Wish us luck!

Love the picture. It will be fun to take a picture at the race. I'm thinking I better get on my action item figuring out which race. I'm gearing up for my first run today. Wish me luck!
